Home Maintenance for Winter

by Desi Sowers

Home maintenance may be the last thing on your mind now that the holidays are over and the days are becoming colder and colder.  Sitting in your home wrapped in your favorite blanket by the fire is likely what you are thinking about this winter.  There is some home maintenance items   you should take care of during the winter months however so that you don’t have to deal with issues caused by not doing so later.  Below is a list of a few home maintenance items you need to go ahead and take care of around your house this winter.

1.      As temperatures continue to plummet this winter you should do your best to protect your pipes from freezing.  You can wrap your pipes with many different things to protect them from the elements such as heat tape and insulated pipe covers.  If your pipes do freeze you can easily thaw them out by wrapping it in a heating pad or using a hairdryer.

2.     Another home maintenance  item you need to take care of this winter to avoid issues later in the year is to do an inspection of your roof, your gutters and your siding as well as your chimney.  Make sure that everything is in good working order before the winter pushes your house to its breaking point.

3.     Winter is a good time to do some cleaning that you might not otherwise think about as well such as cleaning out your range hood, refrigerator coils, dusting off ceiling fans, and dusting off light fixtures and bulbs.  These items typically get overlooked when it is warm outside because you don’t spend as much time indoors when it’s nice out.  Being stuck inside on a cold wintery day is a great excuse or reason to clean these types of things.

4.     Lastly you might want to take the time you have in your home this winter to de-clutter your house.  Getting rid of clutter will not only get rid of fire hazards but will also make you feel more at peace when you do have to spend a lot of time indoors.

These are a few home maintenance ideas that will help you to keep your house in good working order for the year to come.   Why not get started now so that you can then have some time to rest before you have to do it all over again.

Wait! What? That’s Exercise?

by Desi Sowers

Do you hate exercising?  Do you want to be healthier and more fit, but the thought of going to a gym fills you with anxiety?  Well, I am here to tell you that there are numerous ways to “exercise” that you will enjoy so much, you won’t even realize you’re exercising!

Ten ways to exercise without realizing it:

  1. Hiking.  Whether you like the solitude of hiking alone or you would rather go with family and friends, you will be surrounded by the beauty of nature and wildlife and you will walk miles before you know it.  The New River Valley has no shortage of Hiking Trails to explore!

  2. Walking.  If you don’t have time for a hike, go for a walk instead.  Even a fifteen-minute walk can get your heart pumping.  Walk in your neighborhood, or during your lunch break at work.  One way or another, get those steps in!

  3. Larping.  Live action role playing.  Ok…that sounds a little silly, I know.  But for those who enjoy doing it, it’s an adventure that not only gets your imagination going, but gets you up and moving and interacting with other people as well.

  4. Rock Climbing.  It’s one of the best back & arm workouts you can do and when you reach the top of the wall, you will feel a sense of accomplishment that will set a positive tone for the rest of your day. Crimper's Climbing Gym located in Christiansburg offers lessons in climbing and safety…a great place to learn and practice the sport of rock climbing.

  5. Geocaching. For the adventure nerd in all of us…geocaching allows us to be real life treasure hunters and get a great work out at the same time! Check out this web site for information on geocaching and events taking place in VA. Geocaching

  6. Dancing.  So many types of dance, so little time!  You can try swing dancing, Latin dancing, tap!  The options are limitless!  Try some ballroom dancing lessons at the Sapphire Ballroom in Christiansburg.

  7. Climbing on stuff.  Sounds basic.  But you can improve your balance and coordination by climbing on things such as tree stumps, fallen trees and rocks.
  1. Martial Arts. Just like with dancing, there are loads of different types of martial arts.  Not only will you learn to defend yourself, but the practice of martial arts can be a stress reliever. Team Mannon BJJ on Main Street in Blacksburg teaches Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Or head over to Christiansburg and Tonete's Taekwondo to learn this Korean martial art.

  1. Clean.  I’m shaking my head as I type this, because really?  Who likes cleaning.  But by thinking of it as a great way to get fit, you can kill two birds with one stone (so to speak).  Blast your favorite music at max volume and see how much you can get done during one song. Make it a challenging game and before you know it you will not only have a clean house…but you will have worked up a good sweat too!

  2. Play outdoor childhood games with your kids and their friends. Hide and seek, tag, red rover, kick the can.  These games will keep you moving…and probably laughing, while you enjoy quality time with your kids!

So, if “exercise” is a bad word in your book, remove it from your vocabulary and replace it with one of these fun and exciting ways to stay fit! The New River Valley is full of recreational activities! Try the Christiansburg Aquatic Center or hike one of our beautiful trails!
